Philosophy of Education
I cannot say how many people have asked me over the last four years, "Why do you want to become a teacher." I had always wanted to become a teacher as a little girl, but having my children young seemed to put that thought out of my mind. I loved having my children, but they grew too fast and I was given an opportunity to go back to school and pursue my dream to become a teacher and become a lifelong learner.
School life for me as a child had been very difficult and I never thought I would be going back to school, let alone pursue being a teacher. Yet as the past few years have unfolded, I have felt I was made to teach. So much of school life has changed since I was a child. Through my children's schooling and my own schooling in the last years, I have seen both the pedagogy change and the way it is administered, thus resulting in an excellence of learning. This change in pedagogy and how it is taught has given me an excitement and hope to pass this excellence of learning onto my students.
I believe that one of the greatest ways to teach students is through active learning, that is, hands on learning. I also believe in Gartner's theory of multiple learning styles. I would want to allow certain projects that would give the students a chance to use their own learning style, but also work on pushing them out of their comfort zone. My goal would be to have students engage with their learning and enjoy coming to school. My goals would also be that they come away from school learning that they matter, that they are motivated and challenged to learn, and that they can have a positive impact on society. I also will have students work in groups because peers can help students gain more academic motivation. I feel that a teaching method that uses active learning works the best for students to retain the knowledge. This method also allows for certain students who have learning difficulties to have a greater variety of learning approaches.
With classrooms being so diverse today than they were forty years ago, this promotes equality for all learners. I am a great supporter of IEP's because they provide a chance for every student to reach their own learning goal. I believe every student has the right to learn and the IEP is one of the vehicles to aid the student in the progression of learning. Every child has their own learning time table and my job as a teacher is to help them along. An IEP can fit into my active learning approach as the curriculum can be adapted for the learner's need without making them feel like they do not belong to the classroom community.
I feel energized when I am teaching students, and am a great promoter of student-centered learning. I hope to create a positive learning experience for all my students and one that goes with them for a life time; I wish to create lifelong learners. Respecting my students, their families, and my colleagues is a goal I will try to aim at. Teaching has changed greatly over the last few decades and I am so grateful to be a facilitator in this change to students. It is both an honor and privilege to be a member of the teaching community in the twenty-first century.
